Sayalonga is what people picture when they say they want a village with no tourists in it. Eighteen kilometres inland from Torre del Mar, it's a compact tangle of Moorish-era lanes — some barely shoulder-width — spilling down a ridge between the Algarrobo and Turvilla valleys.
Its oddest attraction is the Cementerio Redondo, one of only two circular cemeteries in Spain, built in the early 19th century and still in use. There's also a small museum of the níspero (medlar), the fruit the surrounding terraces are covered in and which gets its own festival in late April or early May.
There's one thing to do here properly, and that's walk: down the Calle Alta, past the Fuente de Cristo, out onto the ridge path with the coast glinting below. Then eat — the village has a couple of restaurants doing €12–€15 menús del día of the kind that has largely vanished from the coast.
Pair it with Cómpeta or Árchez for a half-day loop; the MA-5103 links all three and the driving is the enjoyable part.

- Almost everything shuts 14:00–17:00, including the shops.
- There is no petrol station; fill up in Algarrobo or Vélez-Málaga.
