10 things to do in Torre del Mar

Beach is the obvious one. Here's everything else worth your time — ranked by locals.

#01

Paseo Marítimo de Levante

The 7 km promenade is Torre del Mar's beating heart — palm-lined, traffic-free, lined with cafés and chiringuitos from end to end. Walk it at golden hour.

#02

Faro de Torre del Mar

The cylindrical lighthouse marks the eastern edge of the town beach. Best sunrise spot in Axarquía and a popular running turnaround.

#03

Museo CAVA — Centro de Arte Visual de la Axarquía

Free contemporary-art space inside an old factory. Rotating exhibitions, well worth 30 minutes if the heat is too much.

#04

Iglesia de San Andrés

18th-century parish church at the centre of the old town. Small, white, calm. Step in for the cool air and the tiled altar.

#05

Río Vélez wetlands

The river mouth at the western end of town is a protected bird reserve — flamingos in winter, osprey in spring. Walk the dirt track from the beach end.

#06

Caleta de Vélez fishing port

10 min east. Watch the day's boats unload around 5pm, eat at one of the port restaurants. Best raw-fish energy on the coast.

#07

Tuesday market

The huge weekly mercadillo on the old fairground — clothes, leather, ceramics, the freshest produce in Axarquía. Locals shop here, not at the supermarket.

#08

Day trip: Frigiliana

35 min inland — Spain's prettiest white village. Half-day trip. (Full guide on this site.)

#09

Day trip: Nerja

22 min east — Balcón de Europa cliffs and the Caves of Nerja.

#10

Day trip: Comares

1 hr inland, perched at 700 m. The 'balcony of Axarquía'. Ride the longest zipline in Andalucía above the white village.
