On the water

Water sports in Torre del Mar.

The sea in front of Torre del Mar is unusually calm — the coast runs straight, the shelf is gentle, and mornings are almost always glass. That makes it a good place to try paddleboard or kayak for the first time. For diving, sailing and kite, head 5–15 minutes along the coast.

Paddleboard

Stand-up paddleboard (SUP)

~€12/hr rental · €35 group lesson

The default Torre del Mar water activity. The sea between Playa de Poniente and the lighthouse is nearly always flat in the morning — ideal for first-timers. Rentals from the chiringuitos in mid-Poniente from May to October.

Kayak

Sea kayak & rio Vélez tour

~€15/hr · €40 guided

Rent a sit-on kayak from Poniente for a paddle along the coast, or book a guided trip up the mouth of the Río Vélez wetlands at dawn — herons, flamingos in spring, glassy water.

Diving

Scuba diving (Caleta de Vélez)

€60 discover-scuba · €80 certified dive

The nearest dive centre operates from Puerto de Caleta de Vélez (5 min east). Boat dives around La Herradura and Cerro Gordo — walls, seagrass meadows, octopus and moray. Visibility best May and October.

Sailing

Charter & sailing lessons

€180 half-day sail · €90/day dinghy rental

Puerto de Caleta de Vélez is a small but active marina. Half-day skippered sails toward Nerja for €180 for up to 6, or RYA-style dinghy courses in July/August.

Kitesurf & windsurf

Kitesurf lessons at Los Toros

€65/hr lesson

Torre del Mar itself is too calm for kite. Drive 15 min west to Playa de los Álamos or east to Los Toros for reliable afternoon thermals from April to October. Local schools rent gear and give lessons.

Fishing

Sport fishing charter

€350 half-day for 4

Bookable from Caleta de Vélez marina — chase bonito, dorado and the occasional bluefin in summer. Half-day is enough; morning departures beat the afternoon chop.

When to go

May–June
Warm-enough water (19–21°C), no crowds, best diving visibility.
July–August
Water at 23–25°C, everything open, every chiringuito rents SUPs. Book kite lessons in advance.
September–October
The local's secret: warm water, empty beaches, guaranteed vendors still operating.
November–April
Water is cold (15–17°C). Diving and sailing continue with wetsuits; SUP rentals mostly close.
