Promenade at blue hour

Getting here

Málaga AGP airport is 40 km east — 35–45 min by car. Direct buses: Consorcio CTMAM line M-260 (Málaga–Torre del Mar–Vélez-Málaga) and ALSA intercity coaches run frequently from Málaga's main bus station. There is no commuter train east of Málaga; Cercanías only runs west to Fuengirola.

Best beaches

Playa de Poniente for calm swims, Playa de Levante for chiringuitos, Playa El Hornillo (just east) for fewer people. The lighthouse marks the quietest stretch.

When to go

May, June and September are perfect — 25–28 °C, warm sea, no August crowds. July–August is loud, alive, and 32 °C. Winter is mild and cheap.

Where to stay

Stay between the river (Río Vélez) and the lighthouse for the best walks. Apartments €70–120 in shoulder season. Hotel Mainake is the local classic.

Getting around

Walk everywhere. The town is flat and the paseo runs 7 km. Rent a car for one day to do Frigiliana, Nerja and the Sierra.
