Best of/Things to do

Best sunset spots in Torre del Mar

Updated 31 July 2026

Torre del Mar faces roughly south, which catches out a lot of visitors: from most of the beach the sun sets down the coastline to your right rather than straight into the sea. Where you stand makes a real difference.

In midsummer sunset is around 21:25, in December around 18:10. The half hour afterwards — when the Sierra Tejeda turns pink behind the town — is often better than the sunset itself.

How we judged it

  • An unobstructed western view
  • Somewhere to sit, ideally with a drink
  • Walkable from the centre
  • Works in winter as well as summer

The picks

Playa de Poniente, west of the lighthouse
Best for: Sun setting over waterFree
10 minutes west of the centre

The further west you walk, the more the coastline curves away and the more open the western horizon becomes. This is the best plain-and-free option in town.

El Faro (the lighthouse)
Best for: The photograph everyone takesFree
Middle of the promenade

The lighthouse silhouette against an orange sky is the town's postcard shot. Best 15 minutes after sunset when the sky colour peaks and the lamp comes on.

Watch out: Busy — get there early for the clean angle.

Río Vélez mouth
Best for: Birds, silence and spaceFree
Eastern end, 20 minutes' walk

Flamingos and herons on the water, no crowd, and the mountains catching the last light behind you. The most underrated 30 minutes in Torre del Mar.

Watch out: Take mosquito repellent between June and September.

Chiringuito table with a levante-free evening
Best for: Sunset with a drink in hand€3–€8 for a drink
Poniente-end beach bars

The practical version: sit at a beach table facing west with a cold glass of verdejo and stay put through the entire colour change.

Mirador above Vélez-Málaga or Cómpeta
Best for: The big view, once per tripFree (car needed)
10–40 minutes inland

From the hills the sun drops behind the whole coastline with the sea silver below. Cómpeta's mirador on a clear winter evening reaches to the Moroccan mountains.

Watch out: Driving the mountain roads back after dark takes concentration.
