How a Spanish feria is structured, if you've never been to one: it opens with the alumbrado, the switching on of the entrance lights, followed by six days split into two very different halves. The feria de día runs from roughly midday to early evening with sevillanas danced in the street, families in flamenco dress and cheap food. The feria de noche starts around 23:00 with live bands, DJ tents and a fairground, and runs until dawn.
What it costs: entry is free everywhere. Inside the casetas expect €2–€3 for a beer, €4–€6 for a rebujito (sherry and lemonade, the feria drink), €3–€5 for a raciónes plate, and €2–€4 per fairground ride. A whole evening is genuinely cheap by resort standards.
Bring cash. Card readers exist in the larger casetas but queues move on cash, and the fairground is cash-only. There are ATMs in the town centre but they run dry on feria weekend nights.
With children: go in the daytime or before 22:00. The fairground opens early evening, the rides are aimed at under-tens, and municipal programming usually includes puppet shows and children's workshops. After midnight the ferial is loud, packed and not a place for a buggy.
Practicalities: dates shift year to year but the feria almost always lands in mid-July, tied to the Virgen del Carmen celebrations on 16 July. Check the Ayuntamiento de Vélez-Málaga programme for the exact dates before booking. Walk or take a taxi — the streets around the ferial close and parking within 15 minutes' walk disappears.
