El Yate

El Yate — long-standing fish restaurant on the paseo, known for whole grilled fish, paella and a reliable, no-fuss service.

Updated 19 August 2026

El Yate is one of those restaurants that's been on the paseo long enough that locals just point at it when you ask where to eat fish. The kitchen does whole-fish-on-the-grill very well — ask for lubina (sea bass) or dorada (gilthead bream), priced by weight, served with potatoes and a simple salad.

Ordering fish by weight is the one thing to understand before you sit down. The waiter brings the fish to the table raw so you can see it, then quotes a price per kilo — typically €18–€30 depending on species and whether it's farmed or wild. A fish for two usually weighs 600–900g. Ask for the total in euros before you nod; nobody minds, and it avoids surprises.

The rice dishes are the other reason to come. Paella de marisco and arroz negro are cooked to order and take around half an hour, so order them as soon as you sit rather than after the starters. Minimum two people. If you want the socarrat — the caramelised crust at the base of the pan — ask for it and scrape.

Reliable starters: boquerones al limón, gambas al ajillo, clams in white wine, a plate of jamón, and the local ensalada malagueña. Desserts are the standard Andalusian line-up of flan, tarta de queso and helado; the cheesecake is better than it needs to be.

Atmosphere and timing: this is a sit-down restaurant rather than a beach shack, with tablecloths, indoor and terrace seating and a view over the promenade. Weekends fill with Spanish families for late lunch — 14:30 onward — and it's worth booking. Weekday evenings you can usually walk in.

Budget: expect €25–€40 per person with wine if you order grilled fish, less if you share a paella. Card accepted, service is included in the price and small change left on the plate is the local norm.
