Every Thursday morning the Recinto Ferial fills with hundreds of stalls. Half is the standard Spanish street-market mix (clothes, towels, kitchenware, sandals); the other half is fresh fruit, vegetables, olives and dried fruit straight from Axarquía growers.
It's the biggest market in the area and pulls in shoppers from every nearby village. Get there early — by midday the heat and crowd are both peaking.
What's genuinely worth buying: Axarquía mangoes and avocados between June and November, custard apples (chirimoya) in autumn, tomatoes and peppers year-round, olives sold loose by weight from the brine tubs — ask for aloreñas, the cracked local variety with garlic and thyme — plus almonds, dried figs, raisins from the Axarquía vineyards, and Spanish-made leather sandals at €25–€45.
What to skip: branded perfume, football shirts, sunglasses, watches and electronics. They are copies, the sellers know it, and no amount of haggling makes them a bargain.
How to haggle politely: on clothing, shoes and leather, asking for a small reduction is normal — say '¿me lo deja en veinte?' and expect either a yes or a friendly no. On food, prices are fixed and haggling is mildly rude. Buying two of something is the usual lever for a discount.
