Torrox splits in two: Torrox Costa on the beach and Torrox Pueblo four kilometres up the hill. The town advertises itself, on signs you'll see from the road, as having the best climate in Europe — an old meteorological claim about mild winters that has, for decades, filled the Costa with northern European long-stayers, particularly Germans.
That gives Torrox Costa an odd, useful character: German bakeries, bilingual dentists, physios and estate agents, and a beachfront that stays alive in January when other resorts board up. If you're wintering on this coast, it's a genuinely relevant place to know.
Torrox Pueblo is the opposite — a steep, whitewashed Axarquía village with a proper Sunday-lunch scene and views straight down to the sea. Do both in one trip: village in the morning, beach and lunch after.
At the mouth of the river next to the lighthouse are the remains of a Roman settlement and salting factory, plus a necropolis — open, free and largely ignored by the people sunbathing 40 metres away.
