Playa de Poniente is the long western stretch of beach that runs from the lighthouse roughly toward Caleta de Vélez. It's the wider, calmer half of Torre del Mar's coast and the one most families settle into for a full beach day.
The sand is the dark, mineral-rich type you find all the way along the Axarquía. The sea shelves gently — it's one of the few beaches on the Costa del Sol where small kids can wade out a long way before it goes over the waist. That same flat profile makes it good for paddleboards and easy swims parallel to shore.
Chiringuitos are spaced every couple of hundred metres. Most do espetos de sardinas (sardines grilled on a bamboo skewer over driftwood) from around 12:30 and again from sunset.
FAQ
- Is Playa de Poniente good for children?
- Yes — the sea shelves very gently, lifeguards work the central section in summer, and there are accessible boardwalks and showers throughout.
- Where do I park?
- Free street parking along Paseo Marítimo de Poniente fills up by 11:00 in August. The paid underground car park at Avenida de Andalucía is the reliable backup.
